The 33-year-old German goalkeeper shared the news social media to inform fans about the conditions. Despite being in his peak physical fitness, Ter Stegen revealed he is continuously having the pain and, after consulting with Barcelona’s medical staffs and external specialists, has decided to opted for surgery as the safest route to full recovery.
“Emotionally, it hurts not to be there for the team,” Ter Stegen shared. “But the road to recovery is clear, and I’ll be back stronger.”
According to Ter Stegen, he projected his recovery to take upto two to three months or more, which means the shot-stopper will be absent through the early matches of the 2025/26 season.
Dr Amelie Legalise at the Sports Clinic Bordeaux Merignac will perform the surgery, as it’s officially confirmed and announced by Barcelona , with the club’s medical staff supervising the procedure.
TRANSFER EFFECTS AND SQUAD STRUCTURE
This latest injury development has paused any transfer speculation involving Ter Stegen. Earlier in the summer, rumors swirled around the German with a possible exit, especially after Barcelona signed Joan Garcia from Espanyol, possibly preparing for a transition in the goalkeeping plan.
Now, with Ter Stegen out of action, Joan Garcia is expected to become the No. 1 spot at least until January, giving him a golden chance to prove himself and solidify in the first team.
